Certification Exam Information and Schedule

Testing Eligibility

To be eligible to test, candidates must have successfully completed an approved Arizona Certification Program within the past year. Candidates have 3 testing attempts within one year, to pass the certification testing process after completing a certification program. If unsuccessful after 3 attempts, a candidate must complete another program to be eligible for additional testing opportunities.

Test dates and times are subject to change.

To schedule a test, please contact Melina Joya at melina.joya@azcfse.org, at least 2 weeks prior to the date you select below, and include the following information:

  1. Candidate Name
  2. AzSTARS EIN Number
  3. Candidate Phone Number
  4. Candidate Email Address
  5. Program Sponsor (Community College or Department that conducted your Program/Academy)
  6. What date/location do you want to schedule for? (See schedule below.)
  7. Type of Exam(s) Needed (i.e. Firefighter I, HazMat FRA and FRO, Firefighter I and II, Fire Instructor I…)
  8. Written/Practical Skills or Both? (Practical Skills testing is not available in our Avondale office)

No walk-ins will be allowed to test. Refer to the schedule below for available test dates/locations.

Important Information About Testing Opportunities

The majority of testing opportunities are held in May and December as the spring and fall semesters end. Testing dates/locations are only added to this schedule after dates have been confirmed. Check back often, this schedule is updated as testing opportunities become available.

Certification Exam Schedule

Important Notice for Those Scheduling To Test at AzCFSE’s Testing Site in Avondale:

It is highly recommended that you wear a face-covering/mask once you enter the Avondale testing site and during your exam.*

If you are experiencing any type of illness, even if only a mild cold, you should NOT attend your scheduled exam and will need to reschedule for another date. Anyone displaying symptoms… such as coughing or experiencing any cold/flu-like symptoms will be sent home.

The City of Avondale has the following measures in place, among others, to help reduce the risk:

*As of June 1, 2021, the wearing of masks is optional for all employees and visitors in city buildings (with exception of City Court, and public transit). Advise those who are sick NOT to enter public buildings. *Wearing face coverings or masks within city facilities is still highly recommended, especially for those who are unvaccinated.

** Firefighter I & II and Hazardous Materials
FRA & FRO Written Exams:

(Test candidates are provided 1.5 hours to take a Firefighter exam and 1 hour for HAZMAT unless noted otherwise.)

**Written Exams for ALL levels will be held at the AzCFSE Avondale office at 10:00 am on the 3rd Friday of each month, except for September.

*Practical Skills exams are not available at AzCFSE's testing site in Avondale.

** Additional Written Exams for Fire Instructor,
Fire Inspector, Fire Officer, or Fire Investigator:

(Test candidates are provided 1.5 hours for all other exams unless noted otherwise)
