Certification Exam Information and Schedule

Testing Eligibility

To be eligible to test, candidates must have successfully completed an approved Arizona Certification Program within the past year. Candidates have 3 testing attempts within one year, to pass the certification testing process after completing a certification program. If unsuccessful after 3 attempts, a candidate must complete another program to be eligible for additional testing opportunities.

Test dates and times are subject to change.

To schedule a test, please contact Melina Joya at melina.joya@azcfse.org, at least 2 weeks prior to the date you select below, and include the following information:

  1. Candidate Name
  2. AzSTARS EIN Number
  3. Candidate Phone Number
  4. Candidate Email Address
  5. Program Sponsor (Community College or Department that conducted your Program/Academy)
  6. What date/location do you want to schedule for? (See schedule below.)
  7. Type of Exam(s) Needed (i.e. Firefighter I, HazMat FRA and FRO, Firefighter I and II, Fire Instructor I…)
  8. Written/Practical Skills or Both? 

No walk-ins will be allowed to test. Refer to the schedule below for available test dates/locations.

Important Information About Testing Opportunities

The majority of testing opportunities are held in May and December as the spring and fall semesters end. Testing dates/locations are only added to this schedule after dates have been confirmed. Check back often, this schedule is updated as testing opportunities become available.

Certification Exam Schedule

Important Notice Regarding Illness:

If you are experiencing any type of illness you should NOT attend your scheduled exam and will need to reschedule for another date. Anyone displaying symptoms… such as coughing or experiencing any cold/flu-like symptoms will be sent home.

** Firefighter I & II and Hazardous Materials
FRA & FRO Written Exams:

Test candidates are provided 1.5 hours to take a Firefighter exam and 1.0 hour for HAZMAT.  Firefighter and HazMat retests may also be taken with the exams listed below (See: Additional Written Exams) depending on the required exam time needed.

**Written Exams for ALL levels will be held in Avondale at 10:00 am on the 3rd Friday of each month, except for August, or as otherwise noted.  IMPORTANT: The September testing at Avondale will be held on the 4th Friday (9/25/26).

No other practical skills exams are confirmed at this time. Check back often, this schedule is updated as testing opportunities become available.

** Additional Written Exams:

Tests listed here allow for all written exam retakes, up to a 1.5 hour test time, unless otherwise noted. 

 

***IMPORTANT: There is not enough time available in these listed exams to test Firefighter and HazMat together unless otherwise noted.  You may schedule to retest on either Firefighter, or HazMat, but not both at these exam locations below, unless the total exam time listed is 2.5 hours.

Some exams may have a maximum time of only 1.0 hour if noted below.
